Betty Jean “Jennie” Chaney, a self-employed paralegal for 15 years, died Tuesday at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula. She was 51.

Born April 19, 1948, in Annapolis, Md., she lived in Pebble Beach for 20 years before going to college and then settling in Sedona, Ariz. She moved back to Monterey County last year to care for her ailing father.

Mrs. Chaney attended David Avenue Elementary in Pacific Grove and Pacific Grove High School. Her hobbies included cooking, gardening and sewing. She loved animals.

She is survived by her brother, Jerry Chaney of Arcata; and two sisters, Marjorie Lyons of Easton, Md. And Monette Bannerman of Denton, Md. She was preceded in death by her parents. A gathering of friends will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the Chaney home. The family suggests that any memorial contributions be made to the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, Kanab, Utah.
