FACULTY

Monterey County Herald, CA Sept 24, 2004.

Madelyn Ann Sloan January 28, 1940 ~~ September 20, 2004 PACIFIC GROVE--Madelyn Ann Sloan, age 64, passed away due to complications of cancer on Monday Sept 20, 2004, at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula.

The daughter of Frank and Mary Petrovich, Madelyn was born in Los Angeles, CA on January 28, 1940. She graduated from Montebello High School when she was sixteen; continuing her education and graduating from Whittier College when she was twenty-one.

Madelyn began teaching at Pacific Grove High School and Pacific Grove Adult School in the year 1962. Her students, often being very close to her age, if not older, still admired and respected her. However different the age, all of Madelyn's students came to admire her for her unrelenting passion of teaching and educating of all ages. Madelyn stepped down from teaching to raise a family, only to return and retire from Pacific Grove schools in 2000.

Madelyn was an incredible homemaker, loving mother, thoughtful wife and fun grandmother. She loved cooking, baking, sewing, arts and crafts and all other aspects of homelife. She however, did not contain her passion to the home. Madelyn thoughtlessly accepted a life in the public's eye. She was an appointed official to Pacific Grove's Planning Commission and a member of the Monterey County Grand Jury. She was an elected official to Pacific Grove's City Council where she always fought for what was in the best interest of the City of Pacific Grove and its citizens. Madelyn also worked at the state level in making more affordable housing for low-income families.

Since retiring from politics and teaching, Madelyn has been volunteering for the History Day Competition at the County and State levels. She had become one of the Go to Guys for an answer or help with any aspect of the competition, be it a teacher's , judge's, parent's or student's question. She was an educator to the end.

Madelyn is survived by her husband of 42 years Bill of Pacific Grove; mother, Mary Petrovich of Laguna Hills; brother Mark Petrovich and wife Merry of Surprise, AZ; daughter, Georgianne and fiancée Ronald Checchi, of Pacific Grove; son, Morgan F. Sloan and S.O. Melissa Tabler of La Quinta; her three grandchildren, Austin Richard Sloan, Brianna Nicole Sloan, and Nicholas Milo Checchi; one child from the heart daughter, Denise Robinson; Godson Mark Petrovich of Denver, CO; Goddaughter JoAnn Graham of Hemet, numerous other relatives, cousins, and loving family members. She was preceded in death by her father Frank in 1979. Madelyn was taken from us much faster than any of us could have possibly realized or imagined. She will be missed and loved by all of her friends, young and old, close and far. She will be greatly missed but her love of life and spirit never forgotten.

At the families request, a viewing will take place Saturday, September 25 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Paul Mortuary in Pacific Grove. Friends and family are invited to the house following the visitation. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests any donations be made In Memory of Madelyn Sloan to The American Cancer Society at 1184 Monroe St. Suite 1 and 2 Salinas, CA 93906 (1-800-227-2345).
